Student Highlight: Josefina Campos

Josefina Campos

Coachella Valley Adult School

We are excited to highlight Mrs. Josefina Campos as one of Coachella Valley Adult School’s student-of-the-week. Although Josefina misses her hometown of Jalisco, Guadalajara in Mexico, she is happy to have moved to the United States after getting married to her husband. She has lived in Riverside and Pomona before finally settling down in Coachella.

Josefina was in the process of earning her “licencia de peluqueria” (hairdressing or stylist license) when she relocated to the USA. After becoming aware that she needed to earn an American hairdressing license, she decided to attend the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at the adult school in order to review and pass the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology’s written exam. She further realized that she needed to improve her English skills after learning that she needed more hours of training per the 600 hours required by the state board.

She qualified for the Level 3 ESL class and in between working as a cleaning lady and part-time dog sitter, attended classes from September 2018-2019 before the Covid pandemic hit. After the pandemic, she went back to school in October 2024. Her CASAS and EL Civics assessments have shown much improvement in the verbal and listening skills that after 4 months, she progressed into the ESL Level 4 for advanced students.

Josefina Campos

A team player, Josefina never hesitates to assist other classmates when she sees they need help in either translating or speaking in English. She always participates in class activities whether it is in speaking, reading, or writing.

To further expand her knowledge,Josefina has also enrolled in other programs offered by the adult school such as the cooking/nutrition and business classes where she intends to hone her cooking skills, be mindful of eating healthy, and later on, open her own hair salon in Coachella.

Overall, Josefina continues to encourage, inspire, and motivate other learners in improving their lives by being open to learning new languages and programs. Our Coachella Valley Adult School family is proud of her and wishes her much success in her journey!
